Tucked into a Gion lane, Mokuhei has been serving kaiseki since 1928, passed down through four generations. The chef follows the seasons all the way to the source—hand-picking ingredients like Kagoshima pork, carefully chosen beef, and fresh catches from around Japan—so each visit feels tied to a particular moment in the year. Their cooking is built on Japan’s “five methods” (cut, simmer, steam, fry, grill), and the fourth-generation chef adds a personal twist to grilled dishes by blending in French and Italian techniques, especially with meats. Meals arrive on prized Kyoto ceramics alongside Bizen, Karatsu, and Shigaraki ware. Sit at the first-floor counter carved from rare 3,000-year-old Taiwanese hinoki and watch the craft up close. It’s a short walk from Gion-Shijo, near Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine.
